Live scan is inkless. It is an electronic means of capturing fingerprints in a digitized format and then transmitting them to a state repository such as the California State Police and/or the FBI.

Ink Card Fingerprinting uses ink and hard stock paper cards. Applicants submit prints to be cross-referenced with appropriate criminal database to check on applicant’s criminal history.
