How do I check my DOJ Live Scan results?
The California DOJ does not send Live Scan results directly to you — results are transmitted to the requesting agency (employer, licensing board, or volunteer organization) listed on your Request for Live Scan Service form (BCIA 8016). To check status, contact that agency first. If you need to verify DOJ received your submission, call the DOJ Record Review Unit at (916) 227-3849 with your ATI number (printed on the receipt we give you at your appointment). Most DOJ-only checks post within 72 hours; FBI checks can take 3–7 business days.
How long does a Live Scan take?
The fingerprinting appointment itself takes about 10 minutes — 5 minutes of paperwork and 5 minutes of scanning. Plan for 15–20 minutes total including check-in. Getting your Live Scan results back is separate: DOJ-only checks are typically posted within 24–72 hours, and combined DOJ + FBI checks usually take 3–7 business days. Delays happen when prints are flagged for manual review or the applicant has out-of-state history.
Where do my Live Scan results go and how do I see them?
Live Scan results are sent directly to the requesting agency (your employer, licensing board, or volunteer organization) listed on your BCIA 8016 form — not to you. To view your own results, you must submit a separate Record Review request to the California DOJ ($25 fee, requires a second Live Scan with code 'Record Review'). To confirm your original submission was received, call the DOJ at (916) 227-3849 with the ATI number on your Live Scan receipt.
What is an ATI number and why do I need it?
The ATI (Applicant Transaction Identifier) is a unique tracking number generated when your prints are submitted. It appears on your Live Scan receipt. Keep it — the DOJ, FBI, and the requesting agency all use it to locate your record.
What do I need to bring to my Live Scan appointment?
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID) and your completed Request for Live Scan Service form (BCIA 8016) from the requesting agency. Payment for the DOJ/FBI fee and our rolling fee is due at the appointment.
Can I get my Live Scan results faster?
